Pierre van der Hoven is the founder and CEO of Tuluntulu, a mobile content platform targeting audiences in Africa and globally with African focused content. The app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play and iOS App stores.
1. What inspired you to start a business?
I am a serial entrepreneur (eTV, YFM) who loves to create new sustainable, socially conscious businesses, thereby fulfilling my need for independence and determining my own destiny. I want to make a positive contribution and make a difference in the world, especially in Africa.
2. How did you get your idea/concept for the business?
I identified the huge opportunity in Africa for mobile content offerings driven by mobile penetration, decreasing cost of data and smartphones and the unique “last mile” issues in Africa.
3. To what do you attribute your success?
Passion, commitment, self belief and never giving up.
4. What is unique about your business?
We are unique in that we focus on mobile African content, with a free business model developed for low bandwidth environments
5. Name your favorite business book/s and why?
I have many favorite business books and authors dealing with mindset (Outliers, Talent code) and practical business philosophies (Richard Branson, Jack Welsh, Steve Jobs, Zuckerberg etc.). They inspire people to believe in themselves, and do things differently.
6. If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what
would it be?
It will be tough but believe in yourself, work hard, and never give up.
7. What are your future plans?
To build a leading global company from Africa. And to improve the lives of Africans.
